So how would I explain who I am to someone meeting me for the first time?

One possibility would be to give demographic data that appears on a psychological intake sheet: Smuts van Rooyen is a 60-year-old, married male, father of three grown children, and a minister by profession. He was born in South Africa, has completed a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology and complains of....

Yet such stuff doesn't seem quite like me to me. For example I do not think of myself as a South African anymore, although I sound like one, nor do I see the person inside of me as a senior hitting sixty-one. I'm more like a handsome forty-five in my own modest eyes.

The parts of my self-definition that really matter to me are that I live to proclaim the good news of salvation, that I know God accepts me but struggle with that at times, that I love my wife and family to the point of sin. And oh, I like to tell stories when I preach.
